Match Trivia
Wilsons equalising goal which drew the match, caused a bit of a furore among Rangers fans who thought he was offside. I did not think he was offside, and the Rangers players didnt seem to think so either, but in any case, the Academicals would have been definitely unfortunate to be beaten. They were more like winning. These Hamilton men were all round smarter in front, could keep together better than the Rangers forwards and were quicker in action. It was mostly the failure of the inside men to get away the shot in the first half that gave them an uphill battle to fight, but they fought it well and took most of the honours. The Ibrox front line moved like a badly-oiled machine. The light ball seemed not al all to their liking and kept running away from them. Their defence too, had a worrying game, and you will get of that when I tell you that Gray, according to custom twice cleared from under the bar. A Smith header gave Rangers a half-time lead which was scarcely merited. Venters hit a post from a penalty, but against that, Dawsons goal had more than one of those kinds of escapes which might as easily have been goals. It was a snappy, well-aimed shot by Harrison which equalised 18 minutes after the turn when things looked not all rosy for Rangers. But, four minutes later, McPherson by sheer perseverance rather hoodwinked the Academicals and scored from a difficult angle. So, the Academicals had to start over again, and seven minutes from the end Wilson bored through to hit the roof of the net. That was the goal which caused the hub-bub, but who will say the Academicals did not deserve a point? In the last ten minutes, Smith was in the pavilion with a leg injury which was a handicap, but not a vital one. And, let me say, the two teams were out to win and showed it. Venters missed a first half penalty
