Match Trivia
Bob McPhail signalised his return to RangersÂ’ first team after a long absence by scoring the only goal of a drab league match at Cathkin last night. He netted in characteristic style in the second half when Third Lanark were playing a man short, Stewart having been injured. Both teams had numerous changes. Rangers were most affected, Gray, Symon, Venters and Thornton being absentees. Third Lanark had the assistance of McLeod from Millwall at outside-right, a former Hearts and Rangers player. Opening play was as poor as the attendance. Thirds, who had the elements in their favour were more dangerous. Rangers could hardly raise a gallop forward and Thirds should have held a useful lead. All over it was method-less and monotonous stuff. Third Lanark had little luck at goal but against that McCaffrey saved a penalty from Woodburn just on the interval. Third Lanark lost centre-half Stewart in the opening minutes of the second half through an eye injury. Rangers took full command, and the Thirds were kept busy in defence and played with great courage. McAffrey had two great saves from Findlay and Dawson was also fully tested by Jones at the other end. Fifteen minutes from time, McPhail scored for Rangers with a characteristic pot shot from fifteen yards. It was a much-needed scoring touch, and effectively settled Third Lanark, who were kept on defence until the end
