Match Trivia
Thats another League Championship for Rangers, but it was not easy to clinch it at Shawfield last night. In a needle game, towsy at times, Clyde scored after six minutes through Martin, and although losing Beaton in 17 minutes with a pulled thigh muscle, they held grimly to their slender lead until four minutes from the end when McPhail beat Brown in the gathering gloom. So, the honours went to Clyde, and especially to their handicapped defence, in which evert man fought valiantly, no doubt inspired once again by the fine work of Brown. Over the piece, Rangers were more often threatening, but there was not much penetration about their assaults. Venters stood out the one forward with drive. When Clydes forwards got on the move, they were more like go-getters, and it took all Gray and Shaw and Woodburn could give to keep them out. Robertsons duels with Shaw excited a section of the crowd, whose hysteric yelling was not good for the players or the play. Noble often opened up the game cleverly, and a lot of danger came to Rangers from this source. Wallace also introduced some good forcing work, but Martin, after scoring, found Woodburn difficult to evade. Telford made his mark in the Clyde middle line a grafter all the time, and valuable when the pressure, such as it was, became most severe. In forcing the play, no half-back excelled Urquhart. Clydes goal ensued from a centre by Robertson, a drive by Dawson, who did get contact with the ball, a jib by Martin and a vain attempt by Gray to clear from under the bar. Rangers equaliser followed a corner-kick placed by Reid. When the ball went across, Thornton headed to Venters, and the inside-left breasted the ball to McPhail, whose shot went home. Not a fascinating exposition of football, but a struggle to the death.
