Match Trivia

Here’s a score that answers those who had doubts about the new Rangers forward line. But score apart, the real quality of the five in front was that they worked as a line. Each had his chance to contribute to the team’s effort, and each did it. Aberdeen’s defence was up against something hard to solve, and it was symptomatic of this that, in the second half, Nicholson changed to centre-half and Grant to left-back, which would have been a better formation to start with. The Pittodrie forwards had not a good first half, but the shuffle which made the line read Brady, Hamilton, Armstrong, Biggs and Strauss, worked improvement, and I should think that is the best they can do. Actually, the margin of score should have been narrowed on the chances going, but we must not forget either, near to adding to their tally were the Rangers’ Forwards. Shots went flying past or over the bar which might as easily have shaken the inside of the net. One thing I liked about the Dons was the way they kept coming back even when their position seemed hopeless. There was none of the white feather about them. But the rangers’ forwards were the go-getters, and even when Smith pulled a muscle and had to go to outside-left, they had the more penetration. When at centre, Smith was full of running, but I thought he could have been quicker on the draw. He was terribly fond of that ball. Fiddes helped himself to four of the goals, but he would probably be the first to say that the goals belonged to the confederation, and not to any one man. No doubt about it, however, he took them with a snap which gave Johnstone precious little chance. Both McKillop and Symon could claim some gratitude from those in front of them. Their service was good. Venters started the scoring after 15 minutes by racing in to shoot low into the net after McKillop and Thornton had paved the way. Fiddes got a second, when Johnstone and Nicholson were somewhat at fault. Before Rangers scored again, Brady showed his colleagues how to shoot and Dawson knew all about that. In 35 minutes, came a third goal. Thornton dashed through the defence with the ball at his feet and shot. The ball hit Johnstone’s left-hand post rebounded and Fiddes was on the spot to register again. Coming out after refreshment, Aberdeen fired up, gave the Ibrox defence something to think about – and then lost a fourth goal. Smith was off injured when Venters pushed a free-kick slightly to the right, and Fiddes, dashing in hit the ball from an angle onto the net. Back came the Aberdeen forwards, and some close, puzzling passing left Armstrong with a point-blank shot which had Dawson well beaten. A minute later, Thornton – he was the frisky one – put Fiddes in to score Rangers’ fifth, so that a second for Aberdeen by Biggs didn’t matter a lot. Hamilton will be wondering yet why he did not score a third. It seemed as easy as falling off a dyke. The Referee – Inclined to let some things go but to the advantage of the entertainment.
