Match Trivia

Rather like the weather was this drab game at Ibrox. Promise there was in plenty, but it did not mature. We will say the weather may have had something to do with it. Rangers deserved to win because their forwards could do a bigger percentage of things right than could the indifferent Clyde front line, but it was not a complete display by the Ibrox team. They owed a lot to Simpson and the backs, and to the pivot, in particular. Simpson repeatedly intervened when there was danger looming, and je had often to do it with little space to work in. He was more like the old Simpson than I have seen him for sone weeks. The best part of the Clyde team was also their defence with Brown earning full marks. He played up to his International cap, and undoubtedly saved his team from losing by a bigger margin. His save from a smashing Symon shot in the second half was the real thing. The ball was tearing for the net high up when he got a hand up to it and deflected it over the bar. Hickie also gave good service, and Robertson, in the last half-hour, redeemed a moderate first-half display and was as near scoring as any of his forwards. Rangers’ forwards did not live up to their early standard although they were easily the more likely methodical line and always the more likely to get goals. The only one of the first half was bolted by Venters after 24 minutes, but it was fairly easy for him after Kinnear had centred. Thornton had had a try, and the ball was diverted off a defender. Clyde pulled out a bit in the second half, but a foolish penalty was conceded 15 minutes after the turn-about. McPhail seemed to get the elbow badly in the ribs, and while he was bring brought round behind the goal, Waddell very cooly potted from the spot. Clyde’s forwards disappointed me greatly. Young Goudie got precious little chance to show his mettle, but he looked a lad who will come on. Martin found Simpson difficult to get past and he was not so snappy as he often is. It was the least impressive game I have seen Noble and Gillies play. If you say that loss of confidence had something to do with it, you might be right.
