Match Trivia
Without an urge to go all out to a finish, Rangers did not maintain an early appearance of hitting it off in style. They were three goals up at the interval, and though Ayr got a quick one in the second half, Rangers as quickly cancelled it with a fourth and there never was any doubt about the result after that. The play of the Rangers slid back a lot and left an unsatisfied feeling. Had the united been able to push them closer, there would possibly have been a response, but the Somerset forwards went all wrong with their methods and repeatedly bet themselves. Their idea should have been to swing the ball and shoot, but they were too keen to try to do things with the ball. Mitchell was the only one who showed any enterprise in shooting, and it was right that he should get the goal. Whatever praise is going to the losers must be devoted to Dyer and Strain and Currie. I admired the heart they put into their work, even when the team number was obviously up. There was no funk about them, believe me. In the second half when the ball was skidding a lot, there was some miskicking in the Rangers rear which didnt look well. Indecisive clearing contributed to the loss of the goal. Shaw was tenacious as usual, and Woodburn improved as the game went on. It was noticeable that McKillop trapped the difficult ball better than most, and he was getting it through as well. In front McPhail was the one his second half goal a real left-foot trimmer. Kinner did his share when required. Thornton was an eager trier, as he always is, but he was often with his back to the United goal. He should easily correct that. Fiddes and Waddell had their moments, but as bit more snap near goal would have looked better. In four minutes, McPhail took a pass from Waddell and scored from close range. Thornton shot the second goal in 20 minutes, and it was a good one. Ayr claimed offside against McPhail who had gone over the bye-line with a injured arm, and the referee considered him not to be in the game at the Moment. Just on the interval, Brown let go shot from far out and beat Hall, whose sight seemed to be impeded. When Mitchell shot a very nice goal for minutes after the restart, the United lived up in front, but McPhails next goal, three minutes later, knocked the bottom put of any hope they had of pulling in the slack
