Match Trivia
Thirteen minutes from the end of this match at Firhill, McPhail, with a quick thrust and fierce drive from about 12 yards beat Johnstone and earned Rangers a point. A draw was a fair result, for while Partick Thistle held the advantage during the first-half Rangers came into their own after the interval. However, Thistle must be complimented on losing no more than one goal in the second half, for early in that period Sutherland, their centre-half, collided with Main. Both were off for five minutes, and when they returned Sutherland went to outside right, McKennan falling back. Accordingly, Thistle half-back strength which had bee the feature of their game up till then, was considerably weakened. Both teams played fast and attractive football. Johnstone was in excellent form in the Partick goal and both backs in front of him were stubborn defenders. Douglas was the best of an energetic forward line. Rangers were not quite so evenly balanced as Partick, being stronger on the left than on the right. Dawson, in goal, was sound, and Gray and Venters were the outstanding players among the other members of the defence. Forward McPhail was most profitable. There were several exciting moments early in the game notably when Gray stopped on the goal-line a powerful drive by McKennan which had actually passed Dawson. After half an hour Douglas scored for Thistle with an accurately placed shot from 15 yards.
