Match Trivia

Boys, listen in, and don’t faint. Rangers were two goals down after 25 minutes and could have been a bundle more in arrears had the Dunfermline forwards let fly instead of so often working from a good position into a bad one. Rangers have never played worse than in this first half. The defence could be beaten with ease. The forwards could do everything but the right thing. It was wonderful to behold. McGowan’s goal after ten minutes finished a right wing movement which outplayed the Rangers’ defence. The second goal, by McGrogan was also nicely worked, but I thought he was offside. Rangers appealed, but the referee, after consulting a linesman, held to his decision. In 29 minutes, McPhail knocked one off the deficit from a penalty, and he equalised three minutes later. Smith should have got another, but it was Dunfermline who got it, and another good one it was by McGrogan. It did look bad for Rangers until Fiddes, half a minute from the interval, dodged round Warden and shot a pretty equaliser. All very thrilling, but it was not a case of ‘to be continued’. Dunfermline did not play nearly so well in the second half. Rangers played lots better without ever being the complete team. Smith got the fourth goal four minutes after the restart, and McPhail the fifth twelve minutes later. Smith missed some chances in a way you could scarcely believe. A knock on the head seemed to have put him right off. Brown had a hard job against Chalmers and McGrogan in the first half, but he was more successful afterwards. Simpson had not a good day, nor had Cheyne. It was well for Rangers that Gray could do a bit of neck-or-nothing clearing. Taking Dunfermline on their first half display, I reckon they will beat a lot of others. They had a stuffy defence, and half-backs who were always in position and who got the ball well through to their forwards. McGrogan was the star of the front line and he and Chalmers a good wing.
