Match Trivia

Third Lanark had a great chance to make history at Cathkin Park last night. They got the Light Blues on one of their really bad days and failed to take advantage of that. Generally, the home defenders found the opposing attack oasy to deal with, only Venters gave any trouble. Dawson was the man who stood between Third Lanark and victory, and many of his clearances were in his nest style. Gray and Kennedy were the only other Rangers players to play to form. Third played some clever football in the outfield, with Mason and Yardley most effective. Their old failing of playing too closely and trying to work the ball through proved time and again their undoing. Best men in defence for Third Lanark were Carabine and all the half backs. Muir had one or two good saves, but over the piece was not often tested. Fine play by Venters and Reid opened up the way for a possible Rangers score in the opening minutes, but Drysdale’s finishing effort carried just over the bar. Third made progress towards Dawson, and Yardley fired in a fine shot which the keeper safely held. For a short spell, Rangers’ defenders were in a tangle, but Third’s forwards were unable to take advantage. Macaulay then sent Souter away with a clear field, but the winger sent the ball too far ahead and Muir, running out smothered the shot. Kennedy was Third’s most enterprising forward, and he brought out the best in Dawson with a great shot from 18 yards. Give-and take play followed, with neither forward rank causing much trouble. Drysdale missed one great chance to put Rangers ahead by heading over from Souter’s centre. Then Yardley let go a great shot from inside the penalty area, which flashed past close to the post. Yardley again, from a peach of a pass from Mason, brought Dawson to his knees with a grand low drive. On the resumption, Simpson was seen in the unusual role of centre forward, Drysdale going centre-half. Third immediately took up the offensive, and from Kennedy’s pass Yardley shot hard against the face of the crossbar. Rangers’ defence was being put through it ar this stage, and Dawson again distinguished himself by saving from Kennedy at point-blank range. Fine play by Mason, in which he showed George Brown a trick or two, put Yardley in possession, but the centre was dilatory, and was robbed when in fine position for a shot. Fifteen minutes from the end, Kennedy had rank bad luck to find a fine low drive got the uprights, with Dawson beaten. A few minutes later, Muir saved magnificently from Soutar. The game finished on a scrambling note.
