Match Trivia
By winning at Ibrox last night Aberdeen have the distinction of taking four points from Rangers this season. They deserve their victory, because they accepted their opportunities, and I cannot forget that McPhails goal was decidedly suspect. Gray, Winning, McPhail and Venters were the more prominent home players, and for the winners none did better than Smith, Fraser Falloon, Armstrong and Beynon. Kennedy deputised for Meiklejohn in Rangers team and although they were set to face sun and wind the Light Blues were quickly attacking, one great shot by Venters being saved at full length by Smith. Aberdeens inside trio indulged in some clever footwork, but this did not produce anything tangible. Success came in the most unexpected manner. Beynon tried a speculative lob towards Dawsons goal area, and Jerry advanced confidently to gather it on the bounce, but unfortunately for him, the glare of the sun affected his vision, and he misjudged the height, the ball going off his fingers into the net. This happened 14 minutes after the start. Rangers were staggered at this unexpected reverse. They had been having the better of matters up to his point, but the Dons gained in confidence. Smith had a couple of dashes goalwards, Falloon was pretty safe, and it was left to McPhail to five the visitors a fright, for his snap header was only just stopped under the bar. Rangers forwards could not get going properly, the opposing halfs being too nippy for them, but McPhail missed badly after receiving from Smith and with an open goal in front of him the ball went outside a yard. Rangers pressed hard on the resumption, penning Aberdeen in their own half, and McPhail at last equalised from a palpably offside position, the ball being assisted into the net by a defender. Although the Aberdeen players protested, Mr Webb adhered to his decision. Two minutes later, in a hot raid, McKenzie back-heeled the ball to Mills, who gave Dawson no chance. McPhail again had the ball in the net from a similar position to that of his previous counter, but this it was properly disallowed. At fifteen minutes Venters, with a splendid 25 yards drive, equaliser. This a really fine goal. Rangers continued to force matters, seldom leaving the visitors quarters. There was little sting in their attack, however, and when Aberdeen broke away, the home defence got into a tangle. Simpson handled a cross from Warnock inside the box, and Thomson scored from the spot to give Aberdeen the winning goal in twenty-two minutes
