Match Trivia

‘Meik’ and Main. Venters filled the half-back berth as if it was his usual Saturday job. Cheyne improves with every game. Simpson, frequently ‘in the wars’, touched his best form and finished strongly. McPhail was in one of his quieter moods. Both the wing men did well, and Smith was his usual bustling self. There is just a possibility (for those of speculative mind) that the game might have taken a less one-sided course but for an offside decision against Ballantyne in the twenty-fifth minute. The Clyde centre was going clean through from a McCulloch pass and appeared to be well onside in relation to Cheyne, when the whistle pulled him up. An equaliser at that stage might have made all the difference – but there, as the poet says – “the saddest words of tongue or pen – What might have been!”
