Match Trivia
Rangers showed their belief in the virtue of getting in the first blow. After eleven minutes, they were three goals up. All three, scored by Turnbull in the first minute and Fiddes in the sixth and eleventh, were simply obtained, and Syme and his backs were by no means blameless. In fact, the goalkeeper might have prevented two of them. Against such a leeway, the best of teams might have been excused had they cracked up, but Dunfermline never lay down, and in twenty-four minutes Chalmers, with an angular shot, reduced the leeway. Before the interval, Drysdale restored Rangers three-goal lead. In the second half, Dunfermline gave as good as they got, and McGowan notched a second goal, but Fiddles got another for the Light Blues, and near the end, McPhail, with the nest shot of the match, put on Rangers sixth goal. The game was by no means so one-sided as the score would indicate. Rangers had the best of the breaks, the ball by no means running kindly for Dunfermline. The better team won, however. In craft, positional play and ability to round off their work in the outfield, Rangers were supreme. They were positively uncanny in finding their man with the pass. Dawson kept a grand goal, and never once did he appear in difficulties. I liked the way in which Cheyne kept the ball in play often with an opponent on his top. Kennedy was a grafter, but Brown I have often seen do better. Meiklejohn did not appear comfortable at centre-half, and never bested McGown. Fiddes took the honours in front, and his hat-trick was the result of intelligent positioning. A clever player this. Neither Drysdale not Turnbull did much in a finishing sense, although the latter showed a fine turn of speed. McGowan and, in a lesser degree, Chalmers did good work for the losers. The centre put in a deal of running and had not the best of luck with his finishing. Dunfermline were weak at wing half, but after a shaky start, Warden and Johnman did well at back. Johnman got a knock and went off before the end. Syme was somewhat weak in his clearances, and his handling of the ball lacked confidence. I thought more might have been made of the Dunfermline right wing. Dobson and Thomson were starved most of the game
