Match Trivia

I saw Albion Rovers beat Queen’s Park, and on that showing I looked for something better than they gave us at Ibrox. The chief disappointment were the forwards. On the heavy ground they played the wrong game. They should have been making the ball travel, instead of which they tried to work it, and that was impossible. Rangers’ forwards were the cleverer in making the mall do things, but they did not overdo it. They went in for quick passing, which was the right way to go about it, since the defence found difficulty in making quick recovery. The match turned entirely on a matter of experience and craft in front, and the Rovers suffered most from lack of experience. That is only a matter of time. They led themselves into many traps against cunning Rangers’ half-backs, who had often just do wait and anticipate. Dawson had an easy day, although I admired his full-length save from Dudley in the second half. Gray was grand and Cheyne, with head and feet, was all there. Give the bouquet to the Ibrox half-back. They were match winners behind a good forward line that was handicapped by a greasy ball and insecure foothold. Smith got the only goal of the first half after 24 minutes. Rangers did not hit the high spots in this half, but they were easily superior after the interval. From Kinnear’s centre, Main got a second goal two minutes after the restart. The third came when Crosskey held the ball from Venters’ far-out, left-wing shot and was charged over the line by Main. The fourth goal was Venters’. He took a pass from Smith, and clear of everybody, shot into the net. Again, from a Kinnear centre, Main notched the fifth five minutes from the end, and with a minute to go, Grant, running inside, beat Dawson with a slanting shot. That’s all.
