Match Trivia

Did Dundee give Rangers a fight? They sure did. Robertson’s great scoring shot after three minutes put the heater on fire, and although Gillick cleverly equalised two minutes later, so indifferently, did the Rangers’ forward play in the first half, and so frequently were the Dundee forwards like piercing the home defence that it seemed as if Rangers were on for a bad afternoon. They certainly were able, even in the first half, to keep the play running towards the Dundee goal more than the other way, but when it came to a finish Macaulay was too slow and hesitant and Nicholson could not get any click into his activities. On the other hand, we had Robertson speeding away like a greyhound and shooting hard and often. There was one shot of his which was marvellously saved by Dawson, who put his hand up and deflected the ball against the bar. Later, when Rangers were pressing, Morgan biffed the ball down the field. Coats got clear of everybody and raced to overtake it. Dawson saw the peril and dashed out some 25 yards to kick clear. It was a narrow squeak. Nobody could have been surprised when Macaulay and Venters changed places in the second half. There was an immediate improvement in the Rangers’ forward play and though it took them 27 minutes to get the lead, the goal was always on the way. Venters was the scorer, and no one deserved it more than he did. Lamb did some very fine saving before he was beaten. Three minutes later Gillick was almost in for another when he was tripped, and Macaulay converted the penalty. After that the winners had easily the best of it, although Dundee never lay down, and in fact, Coats, out on the right, gave Dawson a whiz-bang to save at the post for a corner. McPhail finished the game at outside and Venters at inside left, the Barrhead boy having come by a nasty head injury. Both Dawson and Lamb had a good day, with the Dundee custodian much the more seriously tested. Gray was the usual sound back, and McDonald, after finding Robertson as slippery as an eel, held him better. I was sorry to a player of Robertson’s ability being ‘booked’ especially as the infringements he committed were quite unnecessary. Morgan and Gilmour were able defenders. They were both sure in their clearing most of the time, and it was nothing to their discredit if under pressure in the second half, they ballooned the ball a few times. The half-backs on both sides had some stiff work to get through, and in liked the way they hung into their job. There were loose cogs in both forward lines. Nicholson had the sort of chances to score which I have seen him turn to account often, but he could not get things to go right. Venters played in three positions, and was the go-ahead, forcing forward in each of them. Until he was injured, McPhail was more like himself, and Gillick led the line well. Among the Dundee forwards there was too much turning back. Guthrie and McNaughton could have exploited Coats much more than they did. It would have been a good variation to the service given to Robertson. If beaten, Dundee have the satisfaction of knowing that they made a game of it
