Match Trivia
Four times behind in the scoring, four times level; as likely to get their noses in front then as the other side and pull off of what would have been a remarkable win that was Dundees bit of stage play at Ibrox. Yes, Rangers were in real danger, and lucky was it for them that on this day of muddy soil, which needed strong men to barge over it, they had two go getters like Marshall and Fleming. To this duo belongs the credit for winning the match. As for Dundee, they played better than anyone was entitled to expect, and for a part of the first half were in fact the superior team. Their defence suffered as did that of the Rangers, from the fact that the conditions made the judging of the tackle difficult, but half-backs and forward played remarkably well and had the Rangers rear half-dozen often guessing. H Smith was comparable with Marshall, strong on the ball and getting it away just at the right time to convenience Troop and McNab. It was a really good Dundee front line, with not a weakling among the five. McNab was just suited to the heavy going, and he took his two goals like a centre-forward, giving Dawson no chance at all. Take it from me, Rangers were well out of it with the points in their pocket. It was a beautifully taken goal by Nicholson after 14 minutes which gave the Ibrox team their first lead, and he owed the chance to a swinging cross by Archibald. McNab equalised after six minutes, after Troop had centred and Simpson failed to get his head to the ball, leaving him with the goal at his mercy. Meiklejohn was off the field when Marshall got the lead back with another five goals, but Fleming had some of the credit. Dundee were a challenging force right up to the interval, and though then still behind, they were level again four minutes after the restart. This was bad goal, for when T Smith lobbed the ball from far out, Dawson was impeded and had no chance of saving. The ball dropped over the line. Three minutes later James Smith headed a third for Rangers, and four minutes after that H Smith had beaten the defence and laid it on for McNab. This was breezy going, but more was to come. Fleming put Rangers ahead for the fourth time, then H Smith completely outwitted the home defence and scored a beauty for Dundee. Then came Dundees winning chance, for the Rangers forwards were all at sea, and their defence very neatly so. But the turn came when Fleming dashed through to connect with a through pass from Archibald. Edwards ran out, threw himself at Flemings feet, failed to get a grip of the ball, and left it out of the scramble for the Ibrox centre to score just as he pleased. It was a fighting Dundee we saw even after that, but another Marshall-Fleming duet was splendidly climaxed by the doctor whipping the ball past Edwards, and that pretty well settled it, although the Dens Park valiant were tiers to the end
