Match Trivia

For half-an-hour Morton made the game at Cappielow hard and punishing. They scored after 17 minutes, and it was not until the half-hour had gone that Rangers equalised. After that the Ibrox team were always like winners without touching the high spots as a team, although showing some fine bits of combined play – this in particular, along the left. Morton could not get properly going in the second half. They tried hard, but the cohesive touch was elusive. Wilson was a regular hero, and Bourhill and Miller were plucky backs. Clunas was always trying to get the forwards to settle; the head work could be seen, but he had a difficult job grappling with McPhail and Morton, who had the close assistance of Brown. Hunter struggled along gallantly but Ritchie tired. He was made to do a lot of running because of the wide, judicious passes of Kennedy, who I thought, was about the most taking player on the ground. Stewart was a schemer in the Greenock front line, and Borland was a real grafter, but the line did not have driving power. Dawson saved some good hots, but he was at fault with the goal he lost. Gray played a fine, defensive game, but Meiklejohn was – perhaps naturally – not at his ease as a back. He kicked badly and put too many balls over the touchline. Kennedy’s passes all over the field, his anticipation and his beating the man were all very attractive to watch. Simpson was defensive and Brown aggressive. McPhail and Morton were like themselves, and Smith, who came in for injured English, did some very clever things. Archibald was best in the first half. Marshall was variable, but his shooting was strong. It was a ding-dong sort of game to start with, and then Morton went on the lead. Clunas lobbed the ball towards Dawson, who went out, but failed to grip it. Keyes got in a shot, but the ball rebounded sideways towards Shankley, who ran in and netted. This made things livelier than ever. Wilson performed some good saving, and Alan Morton hit the post before Smith headed the equaliser following a nice bit of play between McPhail and Archibald. Six minutes later, Smith ran through and pushed the ball to McPhail, who gave Wolson no chance. McPhail later hit the under part of the bar, and Wilson did some more fine saving before the interval – he was grand. When the second half was 17 minutes gone, Brown was racing through with the ball when he was pushed off. Marshall took the penalty and qualified for going to jail by sending the ball past the post on the wrong side. Smith got Rangers’ third goal nine minutes from the end. Kennedy began the movement with a pretty pass to Marshall, who in turn, transferred to Smith. Rangers finished well on top. Marshall missed a 62nd minute penalty
