Up to the interval play was very entertaining. Some of the contestants took the game so seriously that one could be excused for imagining the cup final was being replayed all over again. Once or twice fists were raised, heads were used when the ball was not the object, and Peter Craigmyle had by no means ab enviable job. Tempers cooled by the interval, and the second half was tame by comparison. Twelve minutes sufficed for the cup-holders to open the scoring. McAulay from just over midfield, had a pot at goal and the ball hit the cross-bar. McPhails rebound shot struck the custodian and Smith had no trouble in netting. Kilmarnock made an immediate reply, and Hamilton had to run out of his charge to clear from Gilmour. In the twentieth minute Gilmour was worming his way through when he was upended by McCaulay, and the resultant penalty kick was converted by Leslie. Matters were very lively about this period, and Kilmarnock were fortunate not to lose another goal. Bell came out to clear a ball, and before he could return Smith headed in. A score seemed certain, but McPhail, in his anxiety to mak siccar, rushed in from an offside position and netted, and the point was rightly disallowed. Kilmarnock immediately burst away on the left, and a swerving cross shot from Aitken reached the net. Rangers made a strong protest on the ground that Hamilton had been interfered with by Gilmour, but Mr Craigmyle after consulting a linesman, awarded a goal. Rangers were not long in getting on level terms again, Marshall netting with a strong shot, with Bell lying injured out of his goal. About ten minutes later slackness on the part of the home defenders gave McPhail an opening, which he quickly accepted, and one minute before the interval the same player brought the Rangers total to four with the best shot of the match. Play was dreadfully slow and dull in the second half. The Rangers half-backs were in complete control, and only occasionally was Hamilton brought into action. Marshall was the moving spirit in the Ibrox attacking party, but there were few incidents worthy of note. Now and again Smith tickled the crowd with some dainty footwork, while Simpson caused a laugh in the second last minute by gripping Gilmour by the jersey. A penalty kick was awarded, but Leslies drive from the spot was saved by Hamilton. In the end Rangers won with something to spare. Leslie missed an 88th minute penalty
