Match Trivia

I haven’t mush good to tell you of the Glasgow Cup-tie at Ibrox last night. For one thing, the Rangers gave the worst exhibition I gave seen an Ibrox team serve up for a long as in can remember. I did not expect so much from Third Lanark, but though they were not a great side, they battled along so well that no one would have been surprised had they managed a draw. As a matter of a fact, Lynas had the goal to himself with noting to do but plunk it into the net just after Rangers had scored their second goal. How he got it over the bar is a mystery. McPhail scored in the first minute and things looked merry and bright for Rangers, but after that the forwards struck a very bad patch – all except Nicholson who took the most out of the chances he got. Fleming got a nasty knock on the face early in the game, and that did not help him. The inside forwards touched rock bottom. Ball control was a t a premium. There was no effective scheming, and very often they beat themselves. The nearest Rangers came to scoring again in the first half was when Nicholson cut out the work, centred beautifully, and Fleming headed right for the target. Waugh sprang to the ball and brought off a magnificent save. Third Lanark’s forward did not shape with any cohesion, but so long as their defence could keep the margin down to a goal there was a chance for them. The chance came 26 minutes after the interval. Dewar saw Breslin unmarked, ran on four or five yards and sent the ball out to the left winger, who placed it in the net out of Hamilton’s reach. Breslin, to my mind, was clearly offside, even if not one of the Rangers’ players made a claim. Then Rangers woke up a bit, but the forward play was still laborious and disjointed, and they now found Waugh difficult to beat – he had some great saves, one from Marshall a wonderful effort, and others from McPhail and Fleming. There were only six minutes to go when Buchanan sent Marshall away. The latter went racing ahead as hard as he could travel, and then swept the ball over to the left. Nicholson was ready, and taking his left foot to it, smashed it in with tremendous force. Waugh made a great effort to save, contact with the post. Almost on the top of this, Dewar broke away on the left, turned and gave Lynas a pass. Hamilton ran out and possibly excited Lynas but, even at that the winger could have netted. Before the end Marshall had a glorious chance from Nicholson but instead of placing the ball Waugh, he went for a full-blooded shot, and it skidded to the left to find McPhail offside. I have few bouquets to distribute among the players. Tom Hamilton did his little bit well. Gray and Newry Hamilton had an easy first half, and nit much more to do in the second. Buchanan was the best half-back playing. He had life in him and was always doing something to force the game. After the equaliser was scored, he showed the other how the tie could be won. Craig did not seem to be himself. The live wore among the forwards was Nicholson. Like Buchanan, he put all his heart into it, and his goal was a beauty. I may be wrong, but I doubt if Fleming is cut out for a winger. Smith was turning too much in front in goal. McPhail’s shot rose too much and yet that should be a easily remedied. It was not a good night for Marshall either. If Third Lanark could have pulled a draw, Waugh was the man to have made them do it. In the last ten minutes, especially, he did great work saving from the feet and heads of the Rangers forwards. He has a punch which I like, and when he uses it, he makes sure to get the ball away at a safe angle. Simpson and Latter were game and stuck to it. Moreland played best of the half-backs. Dewar, when he got the ball, could bustle ahead, but he did not get enough of it. Jack and McFarlane were too fond of shoving it out to the wing, although Jack did several clever things. Breslin came well into the game after he scored
