Match Trivia

Eighteen thousand spectators saw Rangers draw with Aberdeen at Pittodrie. It was vert keenly contested game from start to finish, and the champions were very fortunate indeed to divide the points. They led at the interval by the odd goal in three, but their lead was not justified on play. The game had only been seven minutes in progress when Aberdeen scored. A miskick by Bucanan led up to this goal. He was harassed by Love, who ultimately got possession. He carried on and sent a long pass out to Smith, who was lying unmarked. Gray could not intercept Smith, who from the edge of the penalty area, beat Hamilton with a great left foot drive. The cheering had hardly subsided when Archibald equalised. The Ibrox outside-right gathered the ball from Morton’s corner. He had a look at the Aberdeen goal and placed the ball in the net well out of Yuill’s reach. A few minutes later Morton gave the Rangers the lead. Hill the Aberdeen left-half, failed to clear, and Archibald sent over a breast-high ball. Yuill appeared to have the ball smothered, but Morton nipped in and netted just as the Aberdeen goalkeeper was preparing to clutch the ball. This was a gift from the gods, indeed. Apart from Hill’s mistake, Yuill should have advanced to meet Archibald’s cross. Rangers had the advantage of a strong wind in the first half, and they should have made more use of it. The ‘Light Blues’ did not impress before the interval, and were very rocky in the second half, when Aberdeen were on the aggressive most of the time. It was near the close before Cheyne headed through the equalising goal. Hill got possession on the touch-line, and sent over a high ball, which Cheyne piloted into the net, Hamilton getting his hands to it, but failing to stop it. Aberdeen should have won comfortable. Rangers gave a vert moderate display, and have to thank Hamilton, Gray and Buchanan for saving a point. Meiklejohn was a cripple in the closing stages, and his injury proved a big handicap to the ‘Light Blues’ Buchanan was the best back afield. He made a blunder when Smith scored., but he was cool and steady against the wind, and at a time when Aberdeen were pressing for all they were worth. Muirhead was also in the wars and did not do himself justice. Meiklejohn did well while fit, while Craig was good all through. Fleming and McPhail were Rangers’ best forward. The centre did not get great support, however. Marshall at inside-right, was disappointing, while Archibald, although he put over serval dangerous ball, dilly-dallied too often. The biggest disappointment of the game was Alan Morton. He used to be feared at Pittodrie, but not so much now. Alan was too timid to be effective. Apart from the loss of the second goal, Yuill did splendidly. Jackson was fluky in his kicking in the first half, Livingstone being the better home back. Of a moderate Aberdeen half-back line, Black was best, Hill being a good second. McLaren at centre-half did not impress me. Of the Pittodrie forwards Yorston and McDermid were outstanding. Yorston did not get the right type of pass to be among the goal-scorers
