Match Trivia
It was too easy for Rangers. Hibernian died early. I rather think the loss of a goal five minutes after the start was taken by them as an intimation that their number was up. Ar any rate, everything worked out that way, and I won’t say the crowd felt they had been at a banquet. Those Hibs’ forward were a disjointed company. They scarcely ever got their full weight into an attack. In fact, from first to last, Tom Hamilton’s goal was only once in peril, and then Bradley should have scored, for he was unhampered, and had only the custodian to beat. Rangers knew they had the points safe after opening the scoring. Harris, who deputised for Robb, who has a poisoned thumb, was unfortunate here. He tried to punch away a ball sent over by Buchanan, and it squirmed off his hands into the net. But he made several splendid saves before he was beaten again, this time Fleming, who shot hard from close range after Harris had knocked out one from Buchanan. Hibernian’s position was not improved by Findlay straining a leg muscle and having to go to outside right, but in the second half, the original placings were restored. Rangers played a lot of ‘friendly’ stuff, mostly on the left, which annoyed the crowd, who very properly wanted to see Marshall get some of the ball – his breezy, go-ahead style was just what was required to liven things up. McPhail headed the third goal with a jerk of the head when he was waiting near goal. Harris made more good saves, the Hibs’ forwards one or two forays, and then the crowd went home, thinking things. Brown and Bradley were the best of the Hibs’ forwards. The half-backs made poor comparison with the Rangers’ trio, who were a combination in themselves. Stark and Urquhart did pretty well, and so also Harris. McPhail was on his game, but really it was no test for the Ibrox attack
