Match Trivia
Clyde put up a great show against the league leaders at Shawfield yesterday, where Rangers gained the victory by the odd goal in five. All the Rangers’ team played well, with Gray, Craig and Muirhead outstanding. For Clyde, Fraser in goal, put up a good show, and could not be blamed for any of the goals. Blair was the better Clyde back, and Wallace and Summers shone in the middle division, especially the latter for his fine spoiling play in the first half. Borland, Simpson and Jessiman were the pick of the forwards. Clyde kicked off against a strong wind, and they soon made it evident that they were not to take things lying down from their formidable opponents. Rangers ultimately settled down and the forwards were playing strongly, and at the end of seventeen minutes the ‘Light Blues’ took a well-deserved lead, Cunningham nodding the ball into goal at the post from a Morton corner. Then came a sensation. Morton shot into goal and beat the goalkeeper, but Blair saved an inevitable goal by fisting over. Meiklejohn took the penalty, but Fraser brought off a grand save. Meiklejohn got the rebound, and shot again out of Fraser’s reach, but Blair again distinguished himself by saving on the line, this time with his feet. This stroke of good luck heartened the Shawfield men, and they kept up the pressure, and when the second half had gone 20 minutes Jessiman equalised with an oblique shot. Rangers again put on the screw, and Craig restored the Rangers’ lead with a high shot which gave Fraser no chance. With 13 minutes to go Fleming put Rangers further ahead, and the next minute, following a free kick for the Rangers’ keeper carrying too far, Borland scored for Clyde after several shots had been blocked
