Match Trivia

One minute had elapsed at Shawfield Park when Stirling, in turning in midfield when nobody was near him, found his old knee injury reasserting itself, and he was carried to the pavilion. Thus were Clyde handicapped at the very start, and thus did the bottom fall from the contest before it had barely started. Rangers won by 4-1, but they did not give a superlatively good display against a thoroughly courageous side. The ‘Bully Wee’ held out for the first twenty minutes. At the end of that period the Rangers counted, but it was mat a brilliant goal. The point was chiefly a reflection of the worth of Gray. He rounded off a bit of forcing work with a well-judged shot. Fraser rushed out and fumbled, and Fleming like the wide-awake leader he is, was there to tap the ball into the net. Later, Fleming was on the point of shooting when only Fraser confronted him from two yards out. Blair brought him down, McPhail barged home the penalty kick, and almost immediately the interval whistle sounded. Clyde had indulged in several clever forays, but their lack of weight, plus the fact that the attack numbered four, Hood having dropped into the half-back line, proved their undoing. When Hood, kicking first time as pass from the right, scored early in the second half he had hopes of seeing a fight. But within a minute Craig restored the Rangers’ two-goal lead with a brilliant long shot. Rangers comported themselves with more vigour then formerly after this. Fleming struck an upright. The ball rebounded out, but it rebounded into the net when McPhail touched wood with a clever shot. Later Maguire kicked out a McPhail shot that had beaten Fraser, and Muirhead nearly swept away the crossbar when he rounded off a bright run with a great shot. The shades of night were falling before the Clyde obliged with a few thrusts. They were plucky and clever, but they were opposed by charitable opponents. Maguire and Blair were heroes, and Smith played equally well at centre half-back. The forwards made quite a credible show. Moyes had an easy time in the Rangers goal. Gray was much more effective than McCandless. All the middle men were able, but the forward line was jerky throughout and unimpressive in finishing
