Match Trivia
Wing to an injury to Gibson ten minutes after the start, this semi-final Glasgow Cup-tie at Ibrox Park touched a very high standard. The big Shawfield half-back, cut above an eye, retired, and as play proceeded it became evident that Rangers were in for an easy time. McCrae was drafted to the centre-half back berth, but his arrangement did not keep Fleming from giving a brilliant exhibition of shooting. Six goals was his contribution, and he had almost a seventh. Towards the close Fraser shot up an arm and knuckled the ball over the top. After Meiklejohn had stopped a rocket from McGuire, the Ibrox centre forward registering his first goal at the time Gibson was injured – Fleming got his head to a lovely centre from Muirhead. His next was a solo stunt, and before the turn, McPhail rattled an upright when he should have had Fraser guessing. Clyde made occasional darts right and left, but Gray and McCandless were always masters. Fleming got busy again, and Fraser was beaten once more – an Archibald flag0kick was nodded in fifteen minutes after tea-time. His next success followed a grand McGuire shot which was saved luckily by Hamilton. A brilliant McPhail run and shot brought out the handful, then Liddell struck an upright. By this time the Shawfield defence had cracked up – and little wonder. Fleming scored two more goals after clever work by Morton and McPhail. Clyde are due sympathy instead of adverse criticism. Danny Blair and McCrae, who bore the brunt of a persistent inexorable Ibrox attack, emerged from the tie with credit. The forwards got no support, yet Wallace and Liddell made Hamilton hop at times. Rangers gave a grand all-round display. Behind, Gray was prominent, and the intermediate trio showed judgement throughout. Excellently fed, Fleming did splendidly – his half-dozen goals were of the unsaveable order. McPhail was the schemer, and – strange though it may seem – Cunningham was hardly ever in the picture
