Match Trivia

Rangers were in the mood of cutting things fine in the league match last night. They nipped in with a goal just a minute after the second half had started, and finished up with one when the referee was pulling his watch out to allow himself time to blow the whistle. Had the Ibrox team got a lot more goals it would not have been against the run of play, but one cannot forget the splendid defence put up against odds by the Easter Road men, and particularly by Robb and McGinnigle. It was almost a continuous strain upon the backs and goalkeeper, and while I consider McGinnigle a much superior back to Stark on the evening’s play the latter did not so badly. The first twenty minutes were practically all Rangers, but there was lack of finish. The men expected to get through failed, even Andrew Cunningham himself had not his shooting gun sighted properly. With proper driving power there ought to have been a goal. Occasionally the siege was raised. Ritchie and Bradley were prominent because Dunn and Halligan made them so. But they didn’t make the best of their opportunities. On one occasion McColl had a scoring chance. He missed and left the ball on for the outside left. He did his work fairly well, but a fast low ball travelled to Hamilton, who cleared with ease. Hot drinks on the field, the turn round of the teams, and a thrill. In the first minute a lapse on the left side of the Hibs’ defence allowed McMillan a glimpse of the goal. The inside right took it in at once and on went the first goal. It was practically all Rangers now. Once Hamilton was almost beaten, but I cannot remember him being very seriously troubled again. On the other hand, Robb was always on his toes. There was more power in the Rangers’ shooting. Cunningham got on the mark on several occasions, and Hair and Fleming sent the ball one better than they had done previously. From a Hair centre, which touched McMillan’s head, Marshall got the second goal. Thus ended a game which, if not thrilling, must have been quite satisfactory to the Rangers in their striving for the championship. Rangers’ experimental side did well. Meiklejohn made not a bad back and Hamilton was seldom beaten by Ritchie, Craig and Muirhead were clever half-backs, between whom Shaw, against old comrades, proved a stumbling-block. Hair came in the second half, and Fleming was lively all the time. McMillan was a grafter, Marshall fair, and Cunningham apparently not over-stretching himself, for which I don’t blame him. Robb was splendid, McGinnigle the best back afield, and Miller, after a long spell off, did well. I liked wee Murray. I was disappointed with the Easter Road forwards. They just showed glimpses of the football that is in them
