Match Trivia

Had it not been for the screamer of a shot with which Cunningham opened the scoring, the League match at Ibrox Park between Rangers and Morton would have been written down as wholly dreich. In the second half, after Morton equalised, some excitement prevailed, but it took only five minutes for the Ibrox brigade to regain the lead. Morton went off with a bang, Graham had the ball in the net, but Tom Hamilton had been interfered with previously. After half an hour, and following a flag kick by Morton, Cunningham thundered in a shot which Fotheringham was powerless to save. Rangers pressed after the turn. Fleming hit the crossbar, and a Craig drive was saved by Fotheringham. Morton rallied, and an inspiring bit of play on the left finished up with McCartney crossing for Armstrong to tap past Hamilton. Five minutes later, Shaw pushed forward a ball to Morton which the winger took with his right foot. Fotheringham was again beaten. It was mostly Rangers after this, but Graham came near when he lifted the ball over from five yards range. Rangers’ new back from Newry, Robert Hamilton, made a good debut. In the first half ‘Newman’ beat him several timed, but later he was steadier, and his timing of returns and kicking were splendid. None of the Ibrox half-backs played up to reputation. Fleming missed chances galore in front. Craig and Morton formed the better wing. Morton had a stick-at-nothing defence. Buchanan was always in the thick of it, and Gordon held Fleming all through. In front ‘Newman’, Haddow and Armstrong caused most anxiety to the Ibrox rear
