Match Trivia

Things will happen on a day like yesterday – wet ball, slippy ground and bad light. In Seven minutes, Jamieson had the misfortune to turn a centre from Morton into the net. That began a good day’s work for Morton, for eight minutes later he got the ball from a free-kick taken by Cairns, went round Penman and shot hard. The ball hit the near post, jumped across and struck the other post, and so went into the net. On the general run of the play the Saints were unfortunate to be two goals down, for they played quite a lot of promising football, the only fault of which was the lack of snappish shooting. Swallow and Black were more enterprising than the forwards in that direction. For some time after the turn-round the Saint’s forwards moved better, McLean showing the way with some clever dribbling. Hamilton made one magnificent save from him by tipping the ball over the bar when it was almost through. Ten, just to show how easy it was to get goals, Henderson took a pass through the centre, and dashing between the Perth backs, smashed a shot at Page, who knocked the ball up against the bar. It fell at his feet, and before he could get his hands to it, Morton was in and rammed it home. Three goals down, it looked like a procession, but when least expected, Munro got clear away and beat Hamilton from close range. This made things look a bit better for Saints, and when a couple of minutes later, Shaw missed his kick and let Munro in to score a second goal, people sat up and waited for a sensation. But within other five minutes Henderson, close in, bustled the defence and then pushed the ball to Morton, who scored Rangers’ fourth and his own third goal. That settled it. It was not a good day for playing the real football, but some quite excellent stuff was seen. With their changes forward the Saints did fairly well, though a little more dash, after the McLean pattern, would be to the good. Dickie and McBain made some capital play at times. Swallow was an effective, hard-working defender, and often set his forwards in motion. Black also served the side well. Rangers got their early goals so simply that they were lulled into a sense of false security, but they had the balance of cleverness and cohesion on their side. Certainly, scoring chances were missed, but four goals were enough for the day. Cairns and Morton were happy together, and Muirhead did splendid work in a good half-back line.
