Match Trivia
A thriller of a game at Dens Park saw Dundee just level with Rangers with one goal each, but if Dundee had been able to cap all the chances they got, especially in the first half, they would have won handsomely. There was no doubt of their superiority in the opening period, but rank and tactics at the goalmouth spoilt scoring chances. Towards the end Rangers were giving as good as they got, but somehow it seemed to me that Dundee always had the pull. A goal down within five minutes by a header from Marshall, who picked up a Morton cross, looked bad for the homesters, but after that lapse they made thing hum. Hamilton had a hot time, and corners galore went to Dundee. Cassidy was prominent with several great tries and Cook and McGinn put past when easy chances came. It was good for Rangers that their defence never flurried, Gray and McCandless keeping quite cool during the hottish of fusillades. Once or twice Fleming and Morton got away, but offside tactics by Thomson foiled them. Muirhead strove hard to beat Dundee back, but so keen were the home team that Thomson and Brown both were down having tries for goal. The second half opening was just as sensational as the first. From the kick-off Dundee raced away, and Hunter accepted a ground pass from McNab and tried his luck, with the result that McCandless tried to keep the ball from going through and helped it in. From then on, the struggle continued. We saw more of Cairns and Morton this half, and Cunningham too was at his beat, but the Dundee defence stood like a rock and Marsh did some daring things in goal. There was more pose about the Rangers’ attack, but the Dundee forwards were often dangerous, and Campbell had little luck, which was perhaps, due to the sterling play of Shaw. The biggest crowd of the season witnessed the game, the gate being round about 20,000.
