Match Trivia

Against the Rangers at Greater Love Street St Mirren made three changes in the side that carried them through the Scottish Cup semi-final on Saturday at Parkhead. Yuille deputised for Jock Bradford, Barclay occupied the centre-half-back berth, and the attack was led by J McDonald vice McCrae. Billy McCandless was the Ibrox right half-back Osborne occupied the outside right berth forward, and craig partnered Alan Morton. From the commencement it was evident that the ‘the Saints’ were out to demonstrate to those who were not at Celtic Park at the week-end that they were worthy winners there. Facing a string wind St Mirren got going nicely right away and within a dozen minutes the Ibrox side were a couple of goals behind. Things looked decidedly black for Ibrox at this point, but towards the half-hour there was some improvement, and before the interval a couple of Cunningham pile-drivers levelled matters. Turned about, St Mirren, with the elements behind them, called the tune practically throughout, with the result that a third and incidentally, a deciding Paisley goal midway through came as no surprise. A ‘corner’ given away by McCandless led up to a ‘Saints’ opening ‘counter’ eight minutes after the start – from the resultant flag-kick taken by Morrison Gebbie headed past Hamilton, Then Morgan, fastening on at midfield cut into the centre ere slipping through a ball intended for McDonald. Gray got possession but dallied in clearing and the centre, dispossessing him, scored with a simple-looking thing from twelve yards out. Cunningham who collected the Rangers’ first goal with a ‘grounder’ delivered from just outside the penalty area, had also a hand in Osborne’s equaliser which came along five minutes before the turn. From twenty-five yards out ‘Andy’ let go a rocket which Yuille tipped on to the crossbar. The Paisley goalkeeper got the rebound but before he could rid himself of the ball, Osborne was on his top, to bustle it into the net. Paisley’s all-important goal was really the one feature of a second half which found St Mirren attacking almost incessantly. Gebbie was the scorer. The Paisley inside forward pushed the ball home after J Hamilton had stopped a drive from Howieson. Yuille, both backs, Barclay, Howieson, Gebbie and Morgan, I thought the pick of the Paisley crowd. The Rangers’ Hamilton’s, Gray, Muirhead, Cunningham and Osborne were best in the Ibrox side. Osborne did very well before the interval
