Match Trivia

This was a bit easy for Rangers – more so than the score would suggest. I don’t know what was the matter with the Raith Rovers’ forwards, but somehow, they never could get settled to the game. No doubt the inability of the half-backs to give the men in front a proper service had a big effect. Forwards cannot play if they haven’t a ball to play with. Mathieson did all a goalkeeper could, and Frame and Motes were stickers and did their best to put temper – I mean fighting temper – into the others. Rangers seemed always to ‘feel; their superiority, and certainly in the second half they did not strike me as being gluttonous for goals. The first goal was registered after eleven minutes. Muirhead had to stretch himself to reach the ball high up, and he only managed to divert it to Malone, who pushed it across for Cunningham to shoot into the net before Mathieson could get back into position. Raith’s bastion had one or two narrow escapes before Fleming adroitly scored a second goal. Then a little later Raith were awarded a penalty kick, and Moyes converted. Fleming got Rangers’ third goal close on the interval. For half-an-hour of the second half the play ran all towards Mathieson. Craing and Muirhead had changed places, and the latter was fitting into his new job just nicely. It seemed; however, the Light Blues were content with their lead, but when Miller sprang a surprise by scoring for Raith in a break-away they looked more serious. A minute later Fleming was making for goal when he was pushed, and a penalty was granted. James Hamilton was invited to try, and he made no mistake – he made very few during the afternoon. I noticed that Fleming was hooting oftener, which was the right thing. He will be the centre yet, I think. Meiklejohn’s knee went wrong in the second half, but he played out the game
