Match Trivia

Rangers owed it to the power and ability of their forwards that they scraped through with full points at Tynecastle. The Ibrox men were fairly ‘put through it.’ Some people would have it that the Hearts were unlucky. In a sense they were. Their forwards did most of the attacking. But one had always the feeling that there was a little bit more ‘class’ about the Rangers’ forward play. And ‘class’ told – it generally does. What a lively pace the Tynecastle men set! John White and his mates started off by playing right on top of the Rangers’ defence. The Ibrox backs wavered under the onslaught. McCandless had a lot of trouble with Smith, who almost came up to the Alan Morton standard of slipperiness. Two corners were forced by the Hearts during this spell, and McMillan, Murphy and White got in shots to Robb – none of them very troublesome. The Tynecastle forwards might have had a goal hereabout. Instead of which, the Ibrox lot came away and helped themselves to one. Time, 18 minutes. Morton left Crossan standing and fired the ball hard into goal. A great ‘header’ from Henderson did the rest. This had the effect of steadying Rangers a bit, although a bad miss by Manderson nearly proved fatal. Murray’s shot looked like getting home when somebody diverted the ball past for a ‘corner’. Following this Smith had a great drive which Dixon cleared with his head. Then Willie White had to look spry to stop a shot from Cairns. He was well beaten by a ball from Cunningham, but the inside of the upright saved the situation. As the interval was drawing near, Hearts got the goal they deserved on the run of play. Robb was tempted out by a centre from Murray, and John White headed the ball nicely into an empty goal. On top of that came the best goal of the game. Lying well back, Cunningham sent Morton off with the ball. With some assistance from Cairns and Henderson, Alan carried the ball on and finally placed it well beyond reach of White. Hearts did most of the attacking in the second half, and Robb saved well from John White (twice) and Murray. As awkward as any of these shots, however, was one which Willie White stopped from Morton. All over, it was a rousing, but not a very pretty game. The Ibrox defence have often been seen to better advantage – all except Robb, who did everything that could be asked of him. Manderson was the better back, and Dixon the pick of the middlemen. Alan Morton was in sparkling form. Despite the attention pale to him, he did many really clever things. Cunningham also did good work. Hearts showed all their old ability to rise to the occasion, but the team was not without its weak spots. King never seemed happy, and Murray didn’t get along well. Smith showed real cleverness and was the star article among the forwards. These is grit in this boy. John White was another hard trier. The forward were the best part of the Tynecastle team. As for the others, Willie White, Wilson, Dand and Wright played best. It is long since Alec Wright has been seen to so much advantage as he was in this game.
