Match Trivia
Had St Johnstone been less over-oved by the knowledge that they were playing against the League championships, and at Ibrox, they might have given a better account of themselves. As it was, they were well beaten by three goals to one, and but for the splendid saving of Dempster the score might easily have been much heavier. Only a clever keeper could have got his fingers to two of the scoring shots as the Saint did. During the first half hour ‘the Saints’ gave a hesitating, timorous art of display, and the Rangers, without unduly exerting themselves, led at the cross-over by a typical Alan Morton goal scored after nine minutes’ play. Morton scored another beauty in the first minute of the second half, and we began to wonder how many goals Rangers would put on. But in twelve minutes ‘the Saints’ sent back a persistent Rangers’ attack, and Howieson, after cleverly manoeuvring for position, surprised Robb by shooting into the net over Willie’s head. After this the Perth fellows seemed to realise their own possibilities. Fleming and the men at his other elbow put in some telling work, and had the extreme wing men responded, anything might have happened. Rangers had to play all they knew to get their third goal, which was netted by Henderson deflecting with his head a hard drive by Cairns. Excepting Dempster, none of the defenders proper did any shining, and Rangers were streets ahead of their visitors in the middle. Jock Nicholson gave Alan Morton too much room to work – but perhaps he couldn’t help himself. There are possibilities in the Perth attack, but the extreme wing men must either improve or be replaced. All the Rangers’ forwards were in tip-top form, Henderson in particular showing real football cleverness and shooting with great power and accuracy.
