Match Trivia
In a dramatic finish at Pittodrie the Rangers sustained their second defeat in the League competition. Three minutes before the end Manderson made a mistake, I thought, in ceding a corner-kick. Smith placed the ball accurately and Rankine headed the winner for Aberdeen. Aberdeen’s reward had been on the horizon from the start and belated though their success was, it was well deserved. In a crisp, clean game there was much good football, particularly on the part of the attackers. Aberdeen were steadier and sounder in defence than Rangers, who too often scrambled to safety. Repeatedly the Pittodrie forwards had likely shots either charged down or blocked. Midway through the second half Robb’s goal had a lucky escape. After the keeper had fisted away from Grant, Smith drove the ball hard against an upright. Robb was a busy man and he preformed excellently. Blackwell received a few balls from Cairns, Craig, Henderson and Morton, but the balance of power was always on the Aberdeen side. The Rangers backs were shaky. Meiklejohn and Johnston were the pick of the half-backs, who were easily beaten in the open. Muirhead, Henderson and craig were the leading forwards. Morton shaped none too well against Hutton. With Bruce and Armstrong, reserves, in the side, Aberdeen gave one of their brightest displays. Hutton was a great back, and in a capital middle line Jackson and McLachlan excelled. Forward, Rankine, Smith and Grant were outstanding. The two reserves justified their inclusion. Sixteen thousand people looked on – a first-rate attendance for a mid-week match in the North
