Match Trivia

One of these days – such is football – Rangers will get whacked at Ibrox! But who on earth are to accomplish that feat? It seems beyond the power of any club I have seen this season. On their own delightful green sward, the Light Blues are irresistible. What a game they played against Ayr! Confident, commanding, conquering! Almost before Ayr realised, they were being assailed seriously, their change fell. Meiklejohn did the trick with a lusty left foot drive. Henderson added two before half-time. Typical efforts they were. Tear-away sprints, then unsaveable biffs. Henderson’s methods savour of terrorism. If George Nesbit had quailed when George tried to get the hat trick with half a dozen later attempts, I should bit have blamed him! Those mighty shots are unnerving. Second half play also ran in Rangers’ favour. How could it be so else? Cairns kept slipping the ball through to the centre. Craig – substitute for indisposed Cunningham – struck his real game at length. Morton and Archibald went spanking down those touchlines. Poor Ayr! Then – just for a minute – Referee Dickson was the most conspicuous man on the field. I think I know what was in his mind when he failed to grant Rangers what to me was an obvious penalty. Possibly the official thought Cairns had been fouled before entering the penalty area. But this is certain, it was when a couple of yards inside that Tom was crashed ruthlessly to earth. A free kick given! A nice slip from Muirhead to Meiklejohn. A screaming shot into the top of the rigging. Rangers were four up! Fifth goal was a fitting reward for the clever play of Tom Craig. Nesbit must have felt pretty downcast over this plethora of goals. I don’t blame George at all. He might have lost a dozen, if he had been less quick, less discerning. As a team, Ayr were outclassed. In spots they did quite well. McKenzie, for example, served up cool, cute football that won admiration. Suppose this player were inside left for Rangers, what would his fate be? He’d be wanted for the representative game immediately. Phil McCloy, too, gave his usual strong display. He had a big burden to bear, however. ‘Farmer’ Smith at left half proved a broken reed. A word of praise for Harry Cunningham. Nippy, first-time shot, clever controller of the elusive shot, clever controller of the elusive sphere, cool purveyor to his inside men, Harry can be written down as one of the few successes in Ayr United. Finally, McLeod, half-back stalwart. Most serviceable man on Ayr’s side. For a demonstration of the right way to apply the shoulder, get this strong centre half. He was outstanding
