Match Trivia
Never a great contest at Shawfield, it, nevertheless, was always interesting. And it was a very difficult game to estimate. At stages Clyde were the more likely lot. At other stages Rangers were vastly superior. So, the game fluctuated, and Clyde finished the stronger. No doubt some of the pep was knocked out of the Clyde by Rangers; brilliant and, in truth, fortunate start. Only 90 seconds had gone when Rangers were a goal up. Muirhead, in Cunningham’s place, slipped a nice ball to Archibald. ‘Sandy’ centred to within six yards line. The ball bumped out to Cairns, who promptly shot. Anderson dived low at his right post, but – too late. The ball went below him into the net. He ought to have saved. Muirhead might have counted three minutes later, when he got a lovely ball from Meiklejohn, had he hot slipped in the act of shooting with only Anderson to beat. So, you see Rangers had good luck and bad luck in the first five minutes. Clyde soon found their feet. Duncan gave Robb’s a ‘keeper,’ and Brown was well placed, but found himself offside. Duncan was going right ahead when Nicholson, in Muirhead’s place, brought him down, and Thompson, getting the free kick sent out to him, drove narrowly past. A strong appeal was made by Clyde for a ‘penalty’ for hands against McCandless, who was harassed to clear, but there was noting doing. Shortly after, Anderson was almost caught on the hop with a back-pass from Frame. So, the game went on until shortly before the interval. Rae then equalised from a flimsy ‘penalty’ against McCandless for hands. If that was a ‘penalty’ Rangers should have been awarded one in the second half, when Henderson was heaved on his face from behind when in the act of shooting. However, the Ibrox fellows lost nothing from the incident because they promptly scored again. In exactly 30 seconds the ball placed behind Anderson. The right-wing pair took the ball up a bit. Then it was whacked across to Morton, who carried on and centred. Muirhead scored as fine a goal as one could wish to see. The second half was fought out on pretty even lines with Clyde giving perhaps a little more than they got towards the end. Certainly, Anderson in the early stages had to look lively to clear a ‘corner’ by Archibald and he fisted confidently clear from Morton. Thompson might have equalised had he succeeded with a first-time effort when unmarked. As it was, he missed the ball entirely. Then Brown almost got home a hard low one. But the crowd which numbered fully 31,000 had to go home content with the three goals. I don’t think the winners unduly stretched themselves. Their best were Robb, McCandless, Meiklejohn, Muirhead and Archibald. For Clyde Anderson would have dome a good afternoon’s work had he not misjudged Cairns’ scoring shot. There was little to choose between Cairns and Frame, who played clever defensive football, and Forrest was the strong man in the middle. Forward, Duncan, Thompson and Johnstone were best.
