Match Trivia

The story of the game at Shawfield is a story of less opportunities on the part of the Rangers’ forwards. Chances galore presented themselves, but the forwards line always seemed to break down at the vital moment. In the first half Clyde were much better than their more fancied opponents. The Shawfield half-backs right from the start took command of the situation. The result was that the Rangers forwards were never allowed to settle. This threw a lot of work on the visitors halfs. As a matter of fact, the rear division were often in trouble. The wind was certainly in Clyde’s favour during the first half, but it wasn’t strong enough to account for the loose play on the part of the Rangers. For instance, Muirhead headed the back back in the hope of making ground that way, but Duncan nipped in and was in good position for at least a scoring chance when offside was wrongly, I think. Hansen, whose play throughout the game was steady – good, bad and indifferent by turns, failed to keep his wings going early on, and Forrest also got little room for individual burst, but the great little Dane got in one hard whack which Anderson was glad to get rid of it at the second attempt. Marshall was playing strongly on the Clyde’s right and twice he forced McCandless to put behind, but neither corner yielded anything. As an offset to these Alan Morton wriggled into position and beat Anderson with a fast low ball that hit the net iron after it had passed the post inches on the wrong side. The best chance of the half was when Archibald made ground quickly and pushed a grounder across the goalmouth. Cairns must have been little more than an inch short. No one present will attempt to deny that the second half was all Rangers. The game had scarcely restarted when news came that Morton were leading Celtic 1-0 at half-time. This appeared to revitalise Rangers. Anyway, the half backs came into prominence (up to a point) and the forwards got going (up to a point) Someone always seemed ready to make a mistake. Archibald hesitated when he might have tried his luck. Again he shot over. Muirhead headed over and Hansen never seemed to get a decent chance. But the unkindest cut of all was when Cairns put over from almost under the bar. Archibald sent in a spinning ball, which seemed going into the net. Cairns pushed the side of his foot to it to help it home. It ran up his leg and over the top
