Match Trivia

Carl Hansen left his name and truly printed on the minds of the 18,000 who were at Ibrox. He scored three beautiful goals, and but for that smart performance on his part the game would not have deserved the notice which it is receiving now. The Dane is popular, and his popularity was increased by what he did in this game. He, it was who raised any enthusiasm there was, and his admirers, like Oliver Twist, wanted more – Car. His name was on everyone’s lips. Before I tell you of these three goals which began and ended the scoring I must first of all refer to an incident which occurred in the opening minute of the game. The Airdrie forwards, playing against a strong breeze, attacked. The ball went forward to Reid, and he following on, got the ball off the attempt by McCandless to kick clear. Proceeding, he placed the ball past Robb into the net. I asked the Airdrie centre afterwards what happened. He told me that a foul was given for what he supposed was handling. “The ball neither struck me on the hand nor Arm” he said, “and even if it had I was so close to McCandless that it could bot have been deliberate.” There you have that explanation, and a goal to Airdrie at that time well, you know what a difference it might have made. To return to Hansen’s goals. The first he took 18 minutes from the start. Getting a pass forward, he was tackled by Bennie and McQueen, and in the mix-up, he was left in possession. Going on, he placed the ball out if Shortt’s reach. The only chance which the goalkeeper had of saving was to come out. He didn’t. The second came 16 minutes later. This time he caught a cross from Alan Morton before the ball reached the ground and volleyed it into the net. A grand goal. His third, scored a minute after the half-time resumption, was perhaps the best of the lot. Cairns made the opening and quick as lightening je took the pass and shot high into the net. Congratulations were showered upon him by his own players. What I liked about Hansen was that he returned a like complement to Cairns, who had made the chance for him. The Rangers people must have sighed from relief when they saw that Jimmy Reid’s goal was not allowed. Following on that Rangers had a lot of the play. Two corners, both beautifully placed first by Morton and then by Archibald, were cleared, and when at the other end Doyle was through, Muirhead just tipped the ball from Murdoch’s foot as the latter drew to shoot. There was little hope for Airdrie when Hansen got his third goal, and although they came near to scoring on several occasion, there was not a great deal of sting in the attack. On one occasion McCandless headed out from under the bar, with Robb beaten, and then the goalkeeper stopped a fast one from Thom at about five yards. In the closing stages Shortt had to save twice from Laird and a dropping ball from Archibald. Towards the close play deteriorated, Rangers being content with the lead. Neither goalkeeper had a great deal t do, and Shortt had little chance with the goals. McQueen was the better Airdrie back, and certainly was of more assistance to Bennie than Dick was to Russell. Manderson and McCandless were very safe. The half-back play all over was fairly good. Dixon put in a power of work, Muirhead was better than I have seen him for some time, and Meiklejohn nursed his wing well. Russell struck me as the consist Airdrie half-back, and he certainly held Alan Morton well McDougall and Bennie were quite successful. The Airdrie attack lacked punch. They played dainty football at times, but little that was effective. All the Rangers forwards were in good fettle, with Hansen outstanding because of his goals. Laird did clever things, but finished them off badly
