Match Trivia

There was a lot of fine football shown at Ibrox Park, where Ayr United were the visitors, and it was not all on the one side; as the latter players gave a good exhibition, as did also the Rangers, especially during the first half. Probably because the home team scored when Dixon was off the field for repairs, the Ibrox players were value for their one-goal lead at the interval. Ten minutes before that time Rangers’ centre half had his foot injured, and five minutes later Archibald opened the scoring, with a swift ground drive, which Nisbet got his hands to, but could not hold, and though Smith kicked the ball out, the referee rightly adjudged that it had been over the line. Hansen was the live wire in the home attack, while the Cairns and Morton wing was the more dangerous, and Hogg and Smith had a difficult job in their efforts to stop the pair. A characteristic long, drooping shot from Alan gave Nisbet, no end of trouble in clearing, and such a near thing was it that the home players clamoured for a goal. The play, however, was anything but one-sided, and McLean and McDougall had several times the better of Nicholson, but McCandless usually came to the rescue when the ball was not run over the line. On the other wing, Slade and Kilpatrick were no less successful, and Meiklejohn and Manderson were at times sorely put to it to stop their clever raids on the left. With the return of Dixon, the home team only took nine minutes from the interval to mac siccar, and a class goal it was. Dixon passed the ball to Morton, the latter slipped it on to Cairns, who deftly touched it to Hansen. The Dane, with one of his elusive runs, dodged Farmer Smith, and planted the ball nicely into the corner of the net well out of the reach of Nisbet, who stood helpless. Although Ayr were a beaten team long ere the whistle blew ‘time up’ they had a few runs to the other end, in one of which Manderson and McDougall called for a slight interference by the referee. Robb had an easy day, and though the same could not be dais of Nisbet, he was not often in difficulties. Ayr forwards, who began and played well till half-time, afterwards fizzled out, with the result that the Rangers finished up strongly. Attendance 20,000
