Match Trivia
Rangers took a long time to get into their customary stride in their League encounter with the Hibernian at Ibrox last night. In fact, most of the 13,000 onlookers must have been, like myself, anticipating a draw before Henderson scored a capital goal when only sixteen minutes remained. In clearing a raid by the Easter Road men, Robb punted down the middle, Cunningham adroitly nipped the ball over his head, and the Ibrox centre dashed after it and drove inti the net as the Hibernian backs were closing in upon him. Later, Henderson almost counted again with a header. Harper scooped the ball round a post. Archibald placed the corner-kick right under the crossbar, and Nicolson found it a simple matter to head point number two. A very moderate side in the opening half, the Rangers practically monopolised the play after the interval. Still, it was only in the last twenty minutes that they were anything like convincing. Reliable in defence, the half-backs were not constructive. Dixon and Meiklejohn were best. Alert and resourceful, Henderson excelled in front. Cunningham improved as the game advanced, but the display of the others was indifferent. Hibernian accomplished their best work in the first half; they were a shade the better side, but Robb had difficulty in catching ‘headers’ from Halligan and Anderson. Nearing the interval Harper was in luck’s way when terrific drives by Cunningham and Henderson were intercepted by his backs. Harper, McGinnigle and Dornan composed a first-rate defence; but they were often fortunate to be in a position to block well-taken drives. The half-backs were uniformly useful; while Anderson, Ritchie and Walker caught the eye forward. Thrice during the second half the Rangers made claims for ‘penalties.’ On two occasions, I thought they were justified. But Mr Binnie always said ‘No’
