Match Trivia
Not in the history of Scottish football has the highlands had such luck as to have two noted Southern teams displaying their paces in the capital of the North in the first round of the Scottish Cup. The Glasgow Rangers were of course, the great attraction, and they were pitted against Clachnacuddin, who for some years had not appeared in the North. While not expecting to have victory, the Clachnacuddin were out to demonstrate that the dour North could make some claim for recognition. But early in the match it was evident that the Rangers name had overawed the local men. Clachnacuddin had to rearrange their team on account of McLeay, their tricky centre, having to cry off on account of flu. Winning the toss, Cairns elected to play with the wind, and early it was seen that Rangers were out in real earnest. Clachnacuddin had a surprising run, and McKenzie, who sent by, might have made more of his opportunity. But Rangers settled down, Morton and Cairns cleverly outwitting the defence. Henderson, full of vigour and dash, made no mistake, and when seven minutes had passed, he scored the opening goal, and ere other two minutes elapsed, Henderson had another point to his credit. McDiarmid and Archibald showed clever footwork. Lack of combination and individual runs by the local men inly drew out the cool, calculating mentality of McCandless, who showed all the finesse of a master. A third goal was got by McDiarmid, and a well-placed corner kick was finely headed Henderson, who made the Rangers total four. The second period was dull. Clachnacuddin now and again showing well. Cameron was the pick of the forwards, and Mackay speedy, but wanting support. The centre was weak, as also the left wing. Goodall, who went back, did well, and caught the eye of a few Rangers’ directors, who know real coming talent. Wheeler did fairly well, but had no chance against the rushing Glasgow eagles, although Henderson’s wild shooting in the second period was not convincing of his ability as a marksman. A goal scored by Morton. It was in a way a big defeat, but credit must be given to Clachnacuddin, who played pluckily against such a fine combination. The four thousand spectators were pleased with Rangers display
