Match Trivia
Rangers won at Tynecastle because of their superior methods. They had, however, a desperately hard battle. Willie McCartney’s boys contested every inch of the way and gave their best exhibition of the season. Eight minutes after the start Rangers were one up. Archibald centered accurately, and McDiarmid headed past Kane. Here was a blow to the Hearts. They soon recovered, however, and before long the Rangers’ goal had the narrowest of escapes. George Miller had a great drive that nearly knocked out Manderson and then rebounded on to the timber. For the next half-hour the game went with a merry swing. Just on the interval the Tynecastle men got the goal they deserved. Smillie slipped between the Ibrox backs with a pass from Lister and smartly beat Robb. Bright patches of play by Rangers opened the second half. A troublesome shot from Cunningham caused Kane to flounder about, before he threw behind for a corner. Then the Hearts came away with a great spell of pressure. Miller put over a centre. Lister let drive, and the ball was sailing through when Robb shot out a hand and sent it sky-high. Just when the Tynecastle hopes had risen to their highest off went McDiarmid and Cunningham, never to stop until the centre had sent the ball beyond Kane. Dixon was the most useful man for Rangers. Arthur did great work in holding up the eager, bustling Hearts. Robb kept a fine goal, and of two safe backs Manderson was the more prominent. Cunningham and Cairns shared the forward honours. That the Hearts kept a good grip on the Rangers’ attack was due mainly to the fine play of Birrell, the best man on the Tynecastle side. Crossan, Preston and Ramage were also splendid. From the Tynecastle point of view the most gratifying feature was the improved play of the forwards. Meikle combined with Miller to make up a fine right wing, while Wilson did capital work
