Match Trivia

While Rangers were the more impressive side at Greenock yesterday, they have much to be thankful for. They certainly were under strength through the absence of Manderson and Dixon, but they were not nearly so much handicapped as Morton were. It was known that Seymour would not play for Greenock, and Stevenson was a doubtful started, but the news that French would not strip came as a bolt from the blue. Ex-Provost McMillan and Bob Cochran were on the rack, but fortunately they managed in induce Stevenson to strip, and a favourable team took the field. And they played well. As a matter of fact, they had very much the better of the first half when they had the wind behind them. McNab, who was on the left, for a long time had Gordon on toast, and while Grant on the other touch-line was more often than not five yards too far behind, he got across quite a lot of real good balls. But there was no Greenock centre to drive them home. Gourlay made a very mediocre show in the middle. Balls simply shrieked to be sent past Lock, but nobody was having them. At the other end it was different, Rangers scored when they didn’t seem to have the ghost if a chance -when the game was barely twenty minutes old. A looseness in the Greenock rear gave Bowie the ball; Jamie transferred it to Reid, and Willie sent it in the direction of Edwards, and what a surprise the Ibrox centre got.! The clever Cappielow goalkeeper for once made a mess of things, and the ball got over the line = between the uprights. In the second half the Rangers did better, and while Edwards saved magnificently from Cairns and Archibald, the Greenockians were forced to play second fiddle. In the circumstances it was but meet that the Ibrox side should ass to their first half lead. In seventeen minutes, Reid sent out a nice ball to Paterson, the left winger centred it just as he should, and Muirhead drove it home. That finished the match. In a terribly keen Ibrox side no man did better than Lock; Harry was ay his very best, and while Gordon did lots of clever things I thought that the honours behind were shared equally by Ormond and Ritchie. I have never seen the Dumbartonian to better. In the middle, walls, Cunningham and Bowie, in that order were the men most worthy of mention, and in front I could see no one to equal Cairns. Paterson was clever to a degree, but his partner, if nit so cultured, made up for any deficiency in that respect by his dash and go. Muirhead, I place next – just a little in front of McNab, who showed his versatility by making a real good substitute for Seymour
