Match Trivia

Two curious incidents decided the destination of the points in the important League game at Ayr, where there was a record crowd, the attendance being estimated at 12,000. The visitors were minus Bowie and Gordon, and United again had Agnew at back, Semple being still on the sick last. Right away the home team struck a good game. Manderson downed Richardson inside the dreaded area, and while the Ayr centre received attention strong claims were made for a penalty. To the surprise of the majority of the crowd, Tom Robertson gave a free kick. Some seven yards from Rangers’ goal McLaughlin crossed the ball neatly, McBain got his head to it, and the Blues were one down. Middleton was always dangerous on the home right, and one of his crosses should have been put to better account by McBain and Gray. Near the interval Dixon and Archibald were prominent with two expresses which were on the mark, but Kerr saved in great style. The Rangers resumed as if they meant business, and three corners in quick succession looked like proving fruitful, especially when Kerr made a bad mistake from one of the returns. Ayr’s half-backs, however, opened out the play, and Rangers’ citadel came in for considerable attention. Seven minutes from the restart Archibald all but crossed for Brown to head the sphere into Kerr’s hand. The ball was returned subsequently, and it appeared that it glanced off Agnew’s head and when into touch. The referee thought otherwise, and awarded a penalty amid loud applause from the crowd. Blair took the kick and made no mistake. In the closing minutes a desperate rally by the Rangers almost snatched the verdict, but Kerr kept Cunningham out. It was a fine game, in which the United had distinctly the better of it, and Rangers were fortunate to divide the points. None did better than McLaughlin and Dixon in the respective defences, and forward, Middleton and McBain shone for Aye, while Rangers were best served by Archibald, Brown and Donnachie.
