The balance of power lay with the Rangers, but Hamilton Accies gave then quite a good run for the points. Gordon was at left back, and Joe Donnachie, of Oldham, was in touch with Cunningham on the left wing. Adam Miller was a prominent absentee from the Lanarkshire side. Stewart had a pot shot luckily blocked, and Bowie and Archibald chipped in and kept Mason busy. The Light Blues moved well, but they seldom fitted in for a score. Brown missed, and so did Bowie, and on the other side, Kelly muffed a header when well placed, and Murphy had a dandy shot which Hempsey just cleared for a flag kick. There was a lot to admire in the play of the Lanark boys. Their fault lies in close work, which was not suited to the ground. Donnachie gets them across, but there were a lot of misfits in blue jersey. It took the ‘Govanites’ forty minutes to open their score sheet. Archibald trapped a high ball from midfield, Kerr hesitated in tackling, and Archibald cut in and scored with an unsaveable shot. A minute later Donnachie was ‘downed,’ and he placed the resultant free kick so beautifully that Brown had little difficulty in heading past Mason. It was a tousy finishing five minutes, and Rangers were safe at the turn by a two-goal margin. Rangers in the second half were seldom in danger. They were the more aggressive lot, without doing much damage. Brown never forced a passage in his solo efforts. Bowie never caught the keeper, although he was the best shot afield; all in, the Accies had credit in their defence. Arthur Dixon finished the scoring after twenty-five minutes had gone with the best goal of the match. He fixed on at the eighteen mark, and drove past Mason, high up at the junction at express speed. Arthur got a great ovation for his successful speculative effort. It was Rangers’ game to the finish. For Rangers, Gordon was the better back, notwithstanding his roaming proclivities. Dixon stood out at half. Bowie was the start forward, with Archibald and Donnachie next in order. The Accies’ outstanding player was McNamee. He was bettered by none afield, and was the hope of his side. Mason was good, McAllister outstanding at back, Purdie a great feeder, and of a clever forward line Mathie, Murphy and Stewart were the pick. Scorers :- Rangers – Archibald, Brown and Dixon.
