Match Trivia

Excitement was high at Motherwell, where Rangers were hard put to it to get through with a one goal lead. Hempsey and Craig were tested on more than one occasion ere Bowie was presented with a perfect opening as a result of a free kick by Gordon. He almost got the mark a minute later with a magnificent try. Dixon was more than a match for Ferguson, who got no rope and less lather. Bob McSkimming put a stopper to many Rangers raids. Hempsey’s charge underwent a spirited bombardment, Ferguson, Gardiner, Lennie and Rankin putting in great shots which Hempsey, the crossbar, and great good luck saved from counting. On resuming, Brown made a great individual effort to get through, and but for Craig’s cleverness might have put Rangers two up. Every Ranger was a raider when opportunity afforded, and when the Fir Parkers pressed every Light Blue was a defender. It was a ding-dong struggle, and although Motherwell on one notable occasion near the close almost levelled the score, Rangers held the upper hand to the end and in the closing minutes made superhuman efforts to break down the Fir Park barrier. For the winners, every player played to win. Hempsey was a keeper of surpassing merit. Manderson was the best back afield. Dixon was the best of a rare half-back line. Cairns was the forager of an excellent front rank. Bowie was the finest forward afield. Brown was a hustler. Of the losers, Craig was good, Anderson the best of the backs, and McSkimming carried the honours of a strong and vigorous half-back line. Of the forwards, Rankin, Gardiner and Ferrier were the pick. Ferguson was outclassed.
