Match Trivia

This League match at Ibrox was played in a fog, in which the players flitted about like phantoms. The game was very difficult to follow; indeed it was at times impossible to tell what was actually taking place. The Rangers won as they liked, and were miles ahead of Kilmarnock. At no time did the visitors look like making anything of the tussle. Goals fell to Rangers as easily as ripe fruit falls to the ground. McLean soon opened the scoring. Landells made a mistake and the Forfar boy darted in and gave Blair no chance. Another goal came along in a jiffy. Walls passed to Cairns, and he to Lawson, who squared from the touch-line, McLean was on the spot, and neatly netted. Kilmarnock were seldom in the picture. McLean had a glorious try for the hat-trick, the ball shaving the upright at a tremendous pace. Then a third goal arrived. Cairns let Lawson loose. The winger cut in like a dandy, and before the backs knew what was up he had slashed the ball home, clean out of Blair’s reach. At last Hempsey got a call, which he answered well. It was a smashing shot by Shortt. Rangers were all over the Killie lads. Aitken crossed splendidly, McLean dashed the ball against Blair, Cairns got the rebound and banged on a fourth goal. It was 4-0 at the interval. Kilmarnock made a bright restart. They gave the home defence trouble, and one could see them in the fog crowding in spectre-like upon Hempsey. This did not last long, and Rangers were soon busy near Blair. Dixon slipped along the floor to McLean, who challenged, gave to Bowie. He diddled the backs neatly, and with a nippy shot made the score five. A sixth following slickly, Bowie again doing the trick this time from a corner. McLean added two more goals, bringing his number up to four. Rangers displayed championship form. McQueen in Blair’s place was as good as the Wednesday man. At half and forward all were A1. Kilmarnock were very disappointing. Blair was poorly supported. The halves were completely outplayed, and the van was useless against Dixon and Co
