Match Trivia
It was lucky for Rangers that Sergeant Gordon turned up at Ibrox. They had no picnic against Motherwell. Indeed, on the finer points of the game Motherwell were streets ahead. A miskick by McSkimming and a bit of luck which left the ball at the foot of Gordon for the first goal gave Rangers the victory. The crowd of something like 20,000 had hardly settled down ere the Lanarkshire team showed they were in fine trim. Visits to Lock were frequent. The visiting forwards played beatify football, the triangular play of McIntosh, Lennie and Rankin on the one wing being only equalled by nice, forcible play of Stewart, Gardner and Morgan. Only twice did Rangers get within shooting distance in the first half-hour. Gordon having one terrific drive, which Rundell got on his knees to save. Rangers’ forwards could make nothing of the Motherwell half line. Then the expected happened. Clever play by McIntosh and Rankin landed the ball at Ferguson’s feet, and he shot true out of Lock’s reach. Desperate for goals at the restart, the Ibrox team started the hammering game. Motherwell played the paying game against the wind, and broke away frequently. Gordon changed places with Muirhead, then Bowie changed with Muirhead. Still no effect. Murray and McSkimming put up a great barrage. The players changed places again. It was Manderson who really brought about Motherwell’s first downfall. He drove hard, the ball struck the referee, and ultimately landed near Gordon. The centre took pot-luck, drove in a hard one, and it sped past Rundell. Nine minutes from the finish the ball came across from McDiarmid, McSkimming made a miskick, his only blot on a grand display, and Gordon, despite the fact that he was badly fouled near the six yards’ line, bored through with the ball, which Rundell blocked almost on the post, for McDiarmid to finally make sure it was finally through. The game was fought very hard to a finish, and Motherwell retired beaten, but certainly not disgraced. On the winning side Manderson, Dixon, Archibald, Gordon and Cairns were the pick. For Motherwell every man-jack did his bit. Rankin, Gardner, McIntosh and Morgan were stars.
