Match Trivia

I was disappointed with the Rangers at Hamilton. In no division were they sound, and if now and again individual players gave evidence of a knowledge of what was required of them, their work was not sustained. How different with the Academicals! They were enterprising, they were nippy, and they set out in a fashion that landed them into almost unassailable position in fifteen minutes. All through this half they were likeliest company, and with a little car the margin in their favour might have been wider. Kelly registered the opening goal within five minutes. It was smartly enough taken; still, I have the notion that Lock was at fault in allowing this long shot to travel across his goal and find the net just inside his left-hand post. Herbert was helpless to deal with the next one, however. It was the best of the bunch. Purdie placed to McNeil, who drew Blair out and passed to Murphy. The Ibrox defenders apparently took it for granted that the Rawyards boy would return the ball to McNeill and the extreme player was promptly covered what time his young partner cut in and shot splendidly. At the beginning of the concluding portion the ‘Light Blues’ were liker themselves, but the Academicals defenders opposed their advances with resolution. Eventually, the Glasgow men scored, but it was an unsatisfactory point, granted after the officials had been in consultation. Lawson was tackled on the line by Robertson and Miller. The players were in a heap when the Ibrox left-winger turned the ball into the goalmouth for Duncan to score easily. Hamilton claimed that the ball had been over the line, but their protest was of no avail. For a time the Academicals were kept defending. Duncan netted from Anderson’s centre, but the point was knocked off for offside. Then the Hamilton revival, which saw the issue placed beyond doubt in a peculiar way. Manderson drove the ball hard against Nichol, and it cannoned off the woodwork above Lock’s head. As it came to earth the Ibrox keeper tried to clear, but failed, and the ball curled over the line. I have a good word for every member of the winning team. They put their heart into the business. I preferred Hamilton to Lock, who was none too steady in the Rangers’ goal. Among four good backs Adam Miller was the outstanding, and Manderson was slightly better than Blair. Hamilton were well ahead at half-back. Bowie alone of the Rangers’ trio realising expectations. McNamee was a power, and Paterson the most artistic middle man on view. In the home attack Murphy and Kyle were splendid. The youngster is a rare forager. Kelly was fairly successful, and McNeil’s best work was done in the first half. Nichol did not hit it off at centre; still, he was always worrying the Rangers backs. Lawson was the best Ibrox forward, and Cairns gave him whole-hearted support
