Match Trivia

Rangers won by three goals at Ibrox because they were that much better team in a game that was always interesting. They might even have won by more but one or two brilliant saves by Dundee’s young goalkeeper, Bower, from Dunfermline Juniors, and the smashing of the timber by Scott Duncan and Cairns. But for the manner of that, the Rangers’ goal had at least two narrow escapes from Dundee’s galloping centre, Brown and one from Fisher. I call them narrow escapes, though on each occasion Lock saved with all his old skill, once by an exercise of that almost reckless daring that is the chief characteristic of the man. There were two fine goalkeepers on the field. Dundee should shape into a capital side. The defence is capable, and will not always be so unfortunate as in this game as to see two miskicks lead up to goals for the opposition. If the wings could keep up with Brown – a difficult matter, seeing that he goes like lightning extra well greased – there would be ‘more doing.’ The forward line at times played nice football, but only Brown had the necessary snap near goal. A lot was expected of Moyes, the new boy from Hearts of Beath. He did not hit it off, but I have no doubt he will come on. McDonald, who did a lot of spoiling work, was best when the pressure on his goal was strongest. Burns was the safer back. Without setting the grass on fire, Rangers gave quite a good display. The half-back line was perhaps a trifle inelastic. McKenna could have forced the play a bit more and have made certain of his passes more often going to the right quarter. The forwards struck up a combination, and they were strong in shooting. Charles Duncan, the new centre, takes the ball well with head or feet, and never misses a chance of testing the goalkeeper. Two of the goals were his, the first scored fifteen minutes after the start, and the third close on the interval from a ‘help yourself’ pass by Cairns. In between Scott Duncan converted a penalty. He found a lot of nice passes come his way from Dick Bell, whose only fault was a tendency to keep the ball too close. Archibald delighted the crowd with his jugglery. The little fellow seldom wasted a pass. James Blair showed us some stylish kicking, and the ‘old gang’ had their share in the win.
