Match Trivia

Never was there any doubt about the superior team at Ibrox. Rangers had an easy job in deafing Motherwell, who might, with advantage, have taken shooting lessons from the victors. Rangers took the quickest route to Sneddon. In the doing of it, they opened wide Motherwell’s defence, and the visitors were two goals down before the game was three minutes old. Cunningham mad ete most of a mistake by Collins when he slipped the ball forward to Reid, who shot powerfully past Sneddon with his second kick at the ball. Ten Reid received another nice pass from Cunningham and transferred to Cairns, who, with a rare left-foot drive, beat Sneddon for a second time. These early goals knocked the bottom out of the game, for Rangers were already taking matters easy, but the Motherwell forwards, while playing well enough in the open, were feeble at rounding off their aggressive work. McNeil and F Kelly, when well placed, missed badly. Occasionally Rangers raced down on Motherwell’s defence, and every call brought danger, but only a Reid could have scored that third goal after thirty minutes. Duncan crossed to the centre, who at the moment was covered by Finlayson. He stopped the ball and shot with his left-foot so quickly that the two movements looked like one. Within two minutes Reid again picked up a pass from Duncan and flashed the ball past Sneddon for his own third and Rangers fourth goal. With such a comfortable lead as four goals at the interval, it was not to be wondered that Rangers rested on their oars in the second half. The left wing was seldom seen, and ant time Paterson was offered a chance he showed that he was as bad at finishing as any Motherwell man. Frequently Duncan centred the ball nicely, but for the most part Reid and Cunningham played Rangers’ forward game this half. Twelve minutes from the end McNeil scored while Lock was lying on the ground helpless as a result of coming into contact with Neil in saving from F Kelly. Rangers had their faults, but these were more apparent than real, as the second-half was, to them, only a case of marking time. Reid had most credit pot of the game. He scored three goals and opened out the play well. Besides, he and Cunningham showed a nice understanding. Bowie was also in grand trim, as also was Manderson, but Pursell and Logan were not at their best. Motherwell’s defenders found their task too heavy. Sneddon had no chance to stop these Reid rockers. Penman and Murray were lacking in confidence, and the half-backs were afraid to go far away from them. McStay played effectively, and Finlayson was vigorous and energetic. Of the forwards, F Kelly is the only one worth mentioning
