Match Trivia

Rangers did not play up to their reputation at Shawfield Park. By a couple of snap goals, got within five minutes in the latter part of the first half, they earned full points. But that is the most than can be said for them. It is true that the football was much more treacherous than it looked, and this difficulty put them off their stride to a certain extent. The fact remains that their combination forward was not very impressive. The extreme men – Duncan and Paterson – I have often seen show much more resource in beating their man and getting away. Reid, in centre, played his usual waiting game, and got one of the goals with a characteristic effort. The best Ibrox forwards were the inside wing players – Cairns and Cunningham. Between them they did about three-fourths of the graffing work of the attack. The ‘Gunner’ tried hard for a goal, but he had generally a lot of manoeuvring to do, as the ball seldom came kindly to him. The Clyde were unlucky not to get a goal. As indicating the share they had of the game, they had more really good scoring chances than the Rangers. Lock had some good saves, but he would not have prevented the Shawfield lads scoring without the assistance of Manderson once in each half. Early in the game he had to drop a hard drive from Forrest, the Clyde left-half, and the ball was rolling through when Manderson scooped it out in the nick of time. In the second half, when Lock was out of his charge, Neave managed to slip the ball past him towards the empty goal, and again Manderson’s dash saved the situation. All through the Ibrox right back was in sprightly fettle. Cairns opening goal for Rangers after thirty minutes’ play came from a nice centre by Duncan, and when Reid scored a few minutes later he got the ball passed to him by Hendry, after a smart dribble through by the half-back. Clyde had about two-thirds of the play in the second half, and Rangers required a good deal of Lock and a little luck at times to keep them out. The losers’ defence played well to a man. Black was in his element at centre-half and found opportunity to give Lock one or two stiff shots. The open kicking of young Watson was a treat, and Walker’s astute backing had something to do with the effectiveness of the Shawfield right wing, where Morris was in sparkling form. Of the winners, Lock, Manderson, Logan, Hendry, Cairns and Cunningham were best
